A friend grew up thinking this was the phrase, meaning in an odd way that “less than” well fit the sentiment of “gee, why not, what do I have to lose.”

It’s a goody but it’s very well documented, here and elsewhere: do a google search for “minus well”.
One of these search results is one of the many times that it was mentioned on this forum.
There is no better piece of advice than that of Dixon Wragg, who has had occasion to paste these his words many-a-time:
“I recommend doing this whenever considering posting here: Go to the second search field on the Eggcorn Database page, the one marked “Google Searchâ€, and see if your proposed eggcorn (or other treat) has already been discussed. If so, you may want to add to an existing relevant thread rather than proliferating new threads for the same eggcorn. (It took me awhile to figure this out, so now I mention it to newbies as needed to facilitate their assimilation.)”
This will only search this web-site, where you would see that it was spotted a while back. Not to worry, it’s a rite ( but not right) of passage.
