"hotline and Centre"

On Twitter today some mad capitalizer banging on about Corbyn: “He is a socialist this is what they do,and young people fall For It hotline and Centre, all these people want is free stuff”. Brilliant!

Explain it a bit. I suppose you are offering it as eggcorned from “hook, line and sinker”. How does the (or, a) hotline or the centre fit in to the meaning? It is certainly a striking and complex malapropism, but not so clearly an eggcorn if it doesn’t make sense.

Well, in the sense that “hook, line and sinker” implies something like swallowing the whole system, “hotline and centre” might be describing the full C2B spectrum of the telesales ecosystem – from hotline to call-centre. Possibly mutating out of…

  • “hook” and “line” being both fishing and telephone terms
  • you hold a landline phone to your mouth like a fish to a hook
  • phone scamming, aka phone phishing

    Love how the guy corrected himself further down the tweet’s thread: “Hookline and centre,,, lol”.
