Re: "hotline and Centre"

Explain it a bit. I suppose you are offering it as eggcorned from “hook, line and sinker”. How does the (or, a) hotline or the centre fit in to the meaning? It is certainly a striking and complex malapropism, but not so clearly an eggcorn if it doesn’t make sense.

we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)

Re: "hotline and Centre"

Well, in the sense that “hook, line and sinker” implies something like swallowing the whole system, “hotline and centre” might be describing the full C2B spectrum of the telesales ecosystem – from hotline to call-centre. Possibly mutating out of…

  • “hook” and “line” being both fishing and telephone terms
  • you hold a landline phone to your mouth like a fish to a hook
  • phone scamming, aka phone phishing

Love how the guy corrected himself further down the tweet’s thread: “Hookline and centre,,, lol”.
