"Railroad tiles" for ties

The news reader on the radio this morning read “railroad ties”, hesitated and then corrected herself to railroad tiles. It was an interesting eggcorn moment; did she already think of them as tiles, or did she spontaneously correct what she thought must be a mistake?

Railroad rails were first supported independently on stone blocks, which made control of the gauge difficult. It wasn’t long before crossties were used to tie the rails together. Now that railroad ties are increasingly made of recycled plastic or concrete, the notion that they are tiles might grow in favour.

“Eddie, he said that road was merely the remnants of the old Kahuku Sugar Company railroad right of way. The people who bought lots from this real estate broker just began using the area after the sugar company had the railroad tiles removed.”

The dining room also served as a study, canning, and quilting room. Peter made an 8×4-foot table with four round legs with rollers that he cut from railroad tiles.

Mr. Rauscher mentioned that the Board should let the Town Representative or someone at the MBTA know that the railroad tiles have been fixed over the summer but the covered stone was pushed back away from the railroad tiles.

This is an old logging road that connects the mashiter to Edith lake.
It can be ridden in both directions and has a long Boardwalk. The name references the wood that is built into the road, that feels like railway tiles when biking over them

Works for me.

An eggcorn, I think. But “railroad tiles” does not seem like an evocative observation. Tiles are always laid in contact with the next tile.

Usually next to each other, at least. In some tiling techniques the grout completely separates the adjacent tiles, sometimes there are little spacers placed between them; other tiles have little tabs that do touch, but hold the tiles at the proper distance from each other for grouting. And there are tiling patterns where the tiles are placed further apart in a matrix of concrete or some other material.
