"clinchpin" for "linchpin"

A friend said this aloud to me the other day. We hadn’t seen Mount Fuji on our Japan trip, then, without planning it, saw it out of the train window on our way to the airport. My friend described this as the “clinchpin” of the trip.

They were probably blending “linchpin” and “clincher”. Both seem appropriate for describing the situation, and “clinchpin”, it seems to me, is a mishearing of “linchpin” that seems to make more sense than the original. But curious to hear how others react!

“That clinches it” fits the meaning, where “that linches it” does not. An excellent eggcorn.

Plenty of Internet hits:

Our highly knowledgeable staff is here to answer your parts inquiries and help you find the right Clinch-Pin for your vehicle.

It was reported before, however, by David B.
