The notion of bronzing (sun-tanning) and its association with status and stylishness might be involved too. I was pretty sure I had read the phrase “town bronzeâ€, meaning sophistication, but looking it up it appears it was an invention of Georgette Heyer’s, taken up unsuspectingly by others but not attested from the Georgian and Regency times she was portraying.
