We’ve had cudgels and cuckolds and cackles of the heart.
But what could be more heart-warming than a delicious batch of cookies of the heart?
Regardless though, one story from the stories I’ve browsed so far has stood out for me! Not because it’s a heartwrenching angst filled trip full of pain and misery…but because it’s ADORABLE, amusing, and warms the cookies of my heart.

Sadly, some of the vintage potential examples that Google pointed to (including one in the Congressional Record) turned out to simply be bad OCR of blurry cockles.

Cookies itself seems more likely to have arisen from eye-confusion (the original kind of bad OCR) than from ear-confusion, i.e. to be a visual rather than aural malapropism. Take just a tidge off the right side of the second o , add a bit (maybe even that same tidge) to join the body to the dot of the i , and there you are. However it arises, a malapropism that makes sense makes a pretty good eggcorn candidate.

Of course, cockles being outside of most of our ken except in the context of seafood or this idiom helps motivate the restructuring. (Could any of us define the word without looking it up? I couldn’t.)

(Just looked it up. The ventricles, so called because they are sorta snail-shaped. Well, well!)
Warming the cookies of my heart makes at least as much sense as warming the ventricles. Works for me!
