I heard of an instance where an individual was so annoyed about repeatedly getting junk mail from the same source—after requesting to be removed from their mailing list, no less—that this person marked the envelope with the message: “DISEASED. Return to Sender.” The intended message was “DECEASED. Return to Sender,” but the eggcorn “diseased” clearly carried a bit of humor with it. Not only would the sender be uncertain whether the intended recipient was actually dead, but the sender would next have to consider whether that recipient might be carrying a communicable disease! Although we may find humor in this method to annoy those mass mailers, it is probably not recommended to try this stunt nowadays given concerns over national security.
