Caught myself saying this today. I think it was mostly a phonological thing ―perseveration of the r from square, and I might even have started rounding the w from [wÇn] and gotten a sort of wry “wrun” pronunciation. It is out there written on the Internet:

Guess I’m back to square run trying to get this thing working.
Square run as the place you start to run a course or a race, or where you tell the computer to run the program, works pretty well. Square run in baseball (e.g. the “curveball†example) might be where you start working towards scoring a run. I also have collected back to scratch and back to square A, but they don’t sound so much like square one.

Except for home plate (not a bag, but still), at least in a regulation rather than a sandlot game, and that is square one for starting to run around the square.
