A BOOM vs. a boon

Google counts on August 14, 2006
70,400 “a boom for…”
1,850,000 “a boon for…”

When you don’t know what a boon is, a “boom” might seem good enough.

Examples:

Re: A BOOM vs. a boon

Sometimes a round-tripper takes some time to make the return journey. Yesterday I heard, or imagined I heard, someone use the expression “lower the boon” which might make a mite more sense for those unfamiliar with nautical terms. Any eggcornicity is of course compromised by the proximity of n and m on the keyboard.

She took this job knowing that Florida will lower the boon on her in a flash if there are not some big immediate changes.

Looks like they’re getting ready to lower the boon on us!

Isn’t it time for the sane adults, i.e. academics, to get together and lower the boon on the students and their idiotic bluebook?
