Honda HITCHBACK (hatchback)

Google count:
<500 hitchback
6,000,000 hatchback

A hatch is a upward opening door, and a hatchback is the back on a vehicle which has such a door. Now, a hitch is what connects a vehicle like a trailer to something which drives it, so the notion of a vehicle feature begins to creep in. But, one also uses “hitch” colloquially to mean “join up in marriage.” So….it is conceivable that the proposed eggcorn “hitchback” derives from the notion that the back enclosure is joined up with—or, loosely speaking, hitched to—the back of the vehicle.
