Rome wasn't burnt (built) in a day

This adds something to the orginal idea of the phrase / cliche. The idea that it took a long time to build the roman empire (and hence you need to work hard and persist) is subverted by the observation that the empire is now gone (is empire building futile?). It links nicely with that other well known phrase – fiddling while Rome burns (Nero)
