UltraVIOLENT rays (ultraviolet)

Google Hits on Sept 2, 2006:
41,600,000 “ultraviolet”
269,000 “ultraVIOLENT”
1360 “ultraviolent rays”
Analysis by Joe Krozel

“Ultraviolet” refers to radiation beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum. (Sunlight includes these UV rays, and sunblock is specifically designed to mitigate them).

As a prefix, “Ultra” means “beyond the limit” or “extreme.” In that regard, it is entirely appropriate to speak of ultra-anything, I suppose. So, “ultraVIOLENT” legitimately means “extremely violent.”

(As a sidenote, I would point out that there are other prefixes that convey the notion “beyond” in one sense or another: “Extra-” , “Super-” , and “Supra-” all come to mind. A simple Google search reveals the following:

269,000 “ultraviolent”
1890 “superviolent”
143 “extraviolent”
21 “supraviolent”

My opinion is that “SUPERviolent” is the most natural choice for conveying the proper meaning. And, I further contend that “ULTRAviolent” is the word of choice only because it is an eggcorn suggested by the word “ultraviolet.”)

But none of this is sufficient evidence of an eggcorn without a context where “ultraVIOLENT” might be mistakenly used where “ultraviolet” is intended. So, I return to the context of radiaton. Clearly, given the damage that ultraviolet rays can do to the skin, one might think they are violent, indeed “ultraVIOLENT,” rays. Whence, an eggcorn.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, “infared” produces 678,000 hits on Google, and “infaread” over 200. . .
