Re: Ogre for Augur

I’m thinking a bit about your proposed eggcorn…

There is a discussion of AUGER/augur in the Eggcorn Database suggesting that the substitution of “auger” (a boring tool) for “augur” (to portend) is questionable as an eggcorn. Perhaps a misspelling in that case.

The Eggcorn Database » auger“First and foremost, it doesn’t auger well for the state of science education in the United States.” (California Wild: The Magazine of the California …

Google counts on Sept 14, 2006
326,000 “augur well”
58,200 “AUGER well”
717 “OGRE well”

The usage “ogre well” is certainly less common suggesting that it is not just a misspelling. The central issue, really, is whether the person who says “ogre well” has a meaning which involves images of the word “ogre.” One possibility is that we don’t normally expect any good out of an ogre, so that when an ogre does behave well it must be something special. Whence, “ogres well.” (This interpretation of the utterer’s intent will have to be more closely examined by the linguists before being deemed an eggcorn. You are free to offer you own interpretation).

I’ll conclude with a few examples from the web:
