Yes, I know it could be no more than poor spelling, but somehow it seems some folk have heard ’ fascinated’ and assumed it was about being being held fast by or upon the object of enthrallment. It’s an interesting alternative etymology to the more correct (?) but, for me at least, uncomfortable ‘fasces’ or symbol of power from which ‘fascism’ springs.
