slaver- > slather

Spotted in some copy I was editing and caught before it appeared in print:

“Join me in designing a cheery email and slathering over the thought of our gastronomic treat in the new year”

A quick search on Google found other examples, including

I remember during the Texas – Ohio St game , he was slathering over Ginn , and talking about how he couldn ’ t believe Texas ’ speed was shutting him down …

but it’s hard to tell if this is a proper eggcorn or just confusion over two similar words with vaguely similar meanings hinting at mess and drool …

And only 16 years later comes the round tripper, a close relative of the sliver/slither shift, where slither has almost become an acceptable substitute for sliver.

The product came in a nice big jar which is great for scooping out generous amounts of the cream and slavering it on …

When I see “slaver(ing)” written I have a hard time not pronouncing it SLAY-ver in my mind rather than SLAV-ver, and pawing around in my brain for some connection with slavery. Could one refer to slavvery (= ±“spreading thickly”) if one pronounced it that way?
