Myocardial INFRACTION (infarction)

Google hits on Apr. 4, 2007
2,230,000 “myocardial infarction” ...the original (correct) usage
79,800 “myocardial infraction” ...potential eggcorn usage
68,700 infarction infraction ...this checks for the possibility of typos.
39,800 “myocardial infraction” -infarction ...this removes all cases with the correct usage
Analysis by Joe Krozel

A “myocardial infarction” is the medical term for a heart attack. Infarction refers to a localized region of tissue death due to the blockage. This word looks an awful lot like the more common word “infraction” which means “violation” or “infringement.” It is quite clear how someone might associate a heart attack with the latter notions. Whence, “myocaridal infraction.”

The only other point I would make about this potential eggcorn is that it may actually originate by other routes:
it may be a typographical mistake (perhaps even on a subliminal level) OR it may arise from a spell-checker replacing unfamiliar words with more familiar ones. I think the latter is less likely because persons writing documents heavily laden with medical terms may be prone to turning the spell-checker off altogether. The former possibility is indeed likely since there are 68,700 Google hits for documents which include both infraction and infarction. (But that would theoretically leave over 10,000 hits where only “infraction” is used). Curiously, a Google search with “infarction” removed yields 39,800 hits. Google math. Gotta love it.

Previously noted (as ‘coronary infraction’) as #377 in the old- and hard to access- comment section, dated 4/29/2005.

Re: Myocardial INFRACTION (infarction)

While the heart muscle may become inflamed, that ought to be referred to as myocarditis or inflammatory cardiomyopathy, rather than a myocardial infection. Although there probably are cases when an infection could lead to an infarction.

Medical terminology flashcards: ” MYOCARDIAL INFECTION Death of a part of a heart muscle following cessation of blood supply to it.”

Wellness website: “Each year approximately 1.25 MILLION Americans suffer a heart attack or myocardial infection (MI); more than 400,000 of them DIE as a result of this.”

The following seems more like a malaprop or typo, unless the heart attack has a fungal cause.

Medical journal article title: “The effect of pravastatin on coronary events after mycocardial infarction in patients with average cholesterol levels”

A large observational study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that the jab was associated with a modest, but significant, reduction in the risk of myocardial infunction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack.

Nobody but nobody knows what an infarction is.
