Thomas Bowdler expunged bawdiness from Shakespeare, Gibbon, and the Bible; hence the eponym “bowdlerize.†“Bawdlerize†sounds like ironic wordplay, but I don’t think these writers intended any irony:

Interesting… but to my ear ‘bawdlerize’ would be to add bawdy elements rather than remove them. Both ‘bawdlerize’ and ‘bowdlerize’ have additional difficulties in tripping easily from the tongue which may be why I’ve found 40 ghits for ‘boulderize’, which presents no such problem. Most of these references seem to be about a place called Boulder, which somehow threatens the integrity of a place called Longmont, but others present more of a puzzle – is there some arcane US meaning attached to the word ‘boulder’?
