Bowdlerize >> bawdlerize

Thomas Bowdler expunged bawdiness from Shakespeare, Gibbon, and the Bible; hence the eponym “bowdlerize.” “Bawdlerize” sounds like ironic wordplay, but I don’t think these writers intended any irony:

“Therefore, I advise … that you read the stories yourself and then bawdlerize as necessary before sharing them with your class or children.”

“This is highly ironic coming from the group that spent tens of thousands of dollars trying to convince the Texas State Board of Education to censor and bawdlerize Texas biology books in 2003.”

“The Word of God, despite efforts to down-grade, mangle, and bawdlerize it by a greedy avaricious publishing industry, ....”

“In spite of pressure from The Censors to bawdlerize the series, it actually had emotional content ….”

Re: Bowdlerize >> bawdlerize

Interesting… but to my ear ‘bawdlerize’ would be to add bawdy elements rather than remove them. Both ‘bawdlerize’ and ‘bowdlerize’ have additional difficulties in tripping easily from the tongue which may be why I’ve found 40 ghits for ‘boulderize’, which presents no such problem. Most of these references seem to be about a place called Boulder, which somehow threatens the integrity of a place called Longmont, but others present more of a puzzle – is there some arcane US meaning attached to the word ‘boulder’?
