STAYED (staid)

“Staid” has meanings like reserved, not flighty, not wild. Perhaps these conjure images of a person who is able to stay in one place, whence, “stayed.”

Examples:

Prince of Wales, Weybridge, Surrey, KT13 9NX – pub details ….
The interior was fine and felt quite homely and the service on the whole was good apart from a very stayed lady who had a rather intransigent attidude …

Perhaps ‘stays’, those corsetlike garments, are exerting some not necessarily restrictive influence here I thought, and after a quick dip found also the origin of ‘loose women’...

Thanks Fishbait, I think I’ve lost my mind. When I did a search for staid, I only turned up my list of Paul Brians homophones.
