The Miskito are an ethnic group indigenous to Eastern Nicaragua. Per Wikipedia, their name was ‘corrupted’ to ‘mosquito’ by the first Spanish settlers in the region, and the region became known as the ‘mosquito coast.’ It’s wet, tropical and no doubt has a lot of bugs. This should be considered an ancient or nearly mainstream eggcorn. ‘Mosquito Indian’ gets 600 ghits vs. 19,000 for ‘MIskito Indian.’
The Mosquito Coast is named for the Mosquito Indians, descendants of the Payan Indians who have inhabited the region for at least a 1000 years.
