I must have been 30 or more years old before I realized that the word “misled”, which I had read many times over the years, was a form of the verb “to mislead”. I had always thought it was the – ed form of the verb “to misle” (pronounced with a long “i” sound), meaning “to fool or defraud”—a verb which, of course, does not exist, LOL!

Since it is so widespread, perhaps this could go in the category of words that don’t exist but should. ;-)
