I recognize... / I reckon...

I’m not entirely sure how I want to approach this potential reshaping; I initially thought that “recognize” was being used as a hypercorrection of “reckon”—and maybe it is in a limited number of cases—but it seems that most usages that start out “I recognize that…” are perfectly legitimate constructions. Next I thought about the dialect usage “I reckon that…” and noticed that it’s sufficiently different from other usages of “reckon” ...so I began to wonder whether “I reckon that…” has a folk etymology (read: eggcorn of yore) that stems from “I recognize that…” It’s not listed as such in MW, so I don’t know what to make of this pair of constructions.

Re: I recognize... / I reckon...

There are also a fair number of hits for ‘I recon’. I idly wonder how many are influenced by ‘reconnoitre/reconnaissance’.

I can’t seem to find the original post that jorkel mentions in the follow-up so I can’t check if this comes up.

On the plain in Spain where it mainly rains.
