Kem mentioned in an earlier post that words from the days of sailing are ripe for reinterpretation. “Keelhauling” is from a Dutch word and was a legally practiced punishment in the Dutch Navy for almost 300 years, according to The Straight Dope. It has lately resurfaced on the web with the location being replaced with the effect, as “killhauling”.

This is a credible eggcorn say I, three months later. Dozens of unique hits. Some are intentional puns, but many seem to be standard for the users.
In the three months since burred’s post, by the way, this page with this post has risen to the top of the Google heap. It’s number one in the killhaul pagerank, standing as a beacon to those who would misuse the word.
This makes me wonder: does our work in ferreting out eggcorns reduce the total population? Could eggcorns, like whales, be hunted to extinction?
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
