In Roman times, an auspex was a bird inspector, a reader of signs and portents – an augur. Among the best auspices, sent by the gods to inform the actions of men, were those coming from thunder or lightning (ex caelo, the realm of the birds), from bird calls or flight (ex avibus), from the hunger of chickens (ex tripudiis), and from lesser forms that were privately used, such as the behaviour of quadrupeds (ex quadrupedibus, naturally) and finally from all the other significant events (ex diris) such as sneezes, stumbles, or flames appearing at the point of spears. Auspicious still means “attended by favourable circumstances”. Awespicious blends in a dash of awe, or perhaps modern awesomeness. There are two or three dozen of these.

The Roman’s built ceremonial arches to comemorate awespicious events or people.
The following is another sort of blend, of hospice (q.v.) and auspicious, maybe with a soupçon of hospitality thrown in. It’s interesting that it’s preceded by the article an, as if the h were not pronounced.
