My bike-cycle

my bike-cycle gets infinite miles to the gallon…

Impeccable logic: there are many types of cycle, this is one of them.

Re: My bike-cycle

Has anyone else been puzzled about how “bicycle” got shortened to “bike?” Shouldn’t the second consonant be a sibilant? (i.e., “bice”).

Retroinsertion of nicknames into the names they came from is an old habit. The proper names “Winniefred,” “Elizzibeth,” “Amillia,” “Pennylope,” “Tedward,” for example.

Anything to do with the Greek being “kuklos”? Was the word ever pronounced “baikookle”?
