Has anyone else been puzzled about how “bicycle” got shortened to “bike?” Shouldn’t the second consonant be a sibilant? (i.e., “bice”).
Retroinsertion of nicknames into the names they came from is an old habit. The proper names “Winniefred,” “Elizzibeth,” “Amillia,” “Pennylope,” “Tedward,” for example.
