Has anyone else been puzzled about how “bicycle” got shortened to “bike?” Shouldn’t the second consonant be a sibilant? (i.e., “bice”).

Retroinsertion of nicknames into the names they came from is an old habit. The proper names “Winniefred,” “Elizzibeth,” “Amillia,” “Pennylope,” “Tedward,” for example.

Anything to do with the Greek being “kuklos”? Was the word ever pronounced “baikookle”?
