Something similar came up as nowendays. There have been other conjunctive switches that have caught the eye, such as peace and mind, stock and trade, and one in the same. There are several variants visible by googling, each with its own special flavour: now of days, now on days, now in days, now with days, knowadays, know adays. It’s hard know what to make of them.

I suggest for this particular one a sort of blend with “now and thenâ€, “now and againâ€, maybe even “now and in the pastâ€. It’s not the sort of compelling case for which you can argue “this must have been in the speaker’s/writer’s mindâ€, but it still seems likely to me. Essentially, you would give your brain the instruction to “get the standardized phrase beginning with now É™ and meaning ‘now but not always’â€, and then your brain would get a bit confused over the choices.
