renounced = renowned

Surprisingly many hits: must be standard for someone. One of those that winds up with a kind of opposite for a meaning; incompatible with most common contexts. A counter-eggcorn, or what terminology have we used for those? (A corn-egg? Nah.)

VC Technologies is one of the highly renounced pioneers in strategic offshore out sourcing.

No one even knows that she was the daughter of one of the most highly renounced witch/warlock
families.

she had more reasons to be proud of her family when her husband and Doctor Reid became two of the
most renounced doctors in the land and went on to publish several volumes of books which became
universally accepted by members of their profession.

The world’s most renounced theorists and mental health practitioners offered their contributions. And
for a good reason.

Anyhow, it joins reknown < renowned, reknowned < recognized, renoun < renown, renoun < renowned, renoun < best known The first of these is probably eggcornish; the third has also been discussed onsite.

Re: renounced = renowned

Looks a bit like a cupertino. The person types “renouned,” the spellchecker flags it, and the person picks “renounced” from the list.

Here’s the thread where we discussed antonymic eggcorns. I suggested the name “DNA eggcorns.” We’ve had quite a number of these. “Qualm/calm,” “temerity/tenacity,” etc. “Anticorns” might be another tag. Or “eggkittycorns.”

Re: renounced = renowned

You’re probably right, kem, for a large number of these, possibly all.
.
“Anticorns” I could go for.
.
I’d like to interview a perp on some of these. The oppositeness of the meaning seems like it ought to be a very strong barrier to true eggcornhood, keeping these in the “slips, innovations and reshapings” section. Perps can hardly be construing “renounced” with its standard meaning, and coming up with something that fits the contexts where it is used. But perhaps they are reconstruing the re – prefix to one of its many other meanings, and doing something with the nounce stem ( pronounce, enounce, announce, denounce … ?_
