'life at the end of the tunnel'

This eggcornish variant seems a little too obvious, but it may be those using it have never had to crawl through a culvert dragging a rope and rejoicing as that little disc of light grows larger. Be that as it may, the life variant has much to recommend it. After all, the tunnel could end deep underground with the blank wall illuminated by the guttering stump of a tiny candle, or by a few stray photons fizzing about a phosphorescent corpse.
