Rigor mortars

Suggested by Dixon’s post of rigor Morris.

Presence of blood in left ventricle indicates that either rigor mortars did not occur or weak myocardium. Rigor mortars start immediate after death with tetanus or strychnine poisoning as well as in weak and emaciated animals.
Pathology exam key

His younger brother, only two years younger, was found near his mutilated body, dead of an overdose. Rigor Mortars had already set in for quite some time before the bodies were found.
Dream story

The mighty Striped Bass has barely had time to go through rigor mortars.
Fic

I see Sean Quinn has arrived to ensure rigor mortar sets in early….
Political snipe

I truly thought that I would not be able to part my legs—-like they would be stuck together in some sort of rigor mortar-esque way

Rigor mortars must be what makes stiffs stiffen. I was surprised to learn that mortar and mortis are distant cognates by a roundabout route. Mortar comes from the name for the bowl in which cements were pounded, cognate with Greek maraínein (fade, wear away), from proto-Indo-European *mer-. Like the amaranth, the flower which does not fade. Or maybe the bowl got its name from what happens within it. The same PIE root led to death, as they say, in Venice.

Re: Rigor mortars

And:

I think my dog has gone into rigger mortis….
photo caption

Its dead flesh was torn with gaping wounds grayed by death and riddled with evidence of rigger mortis.
bust description

I would guess that is a real photo of a real corpse, but based on the inclination of the head, it was stood up out of the coffin after rigger mortis had set in.
