Rigor mortars must be what makes stiffs stiffen. I was surprised to learn that mortar and mortis are distant cognates by a roundabout route. Mortar comes from the name for the bowl in which cements were pounded, cognate with Greek maraÃnein (fade, wear away), from proto-Indo-European *mer-. Like the amaranth, the flower which does not fade. Or maybe the bowl got its name from what happens within it. The same PIE root led to death, as they say, in Venice.
