"Site" for "sight" - principally in "site seeing"

Maybe people think “site” is just a “lite” spelling of “sight,” formed on the same principle as “thru” and “tho”—but “site” has a meaning of its own.

Site” is used a lot in websites that promote hotels, resorts, and various services to tourists:

Sometimes it’s not clear whether the writer is consciously using a nonstandard spelling. It’s hard to imagine this being unconscious:

Various kinds of site/sight substitutions have been discussed in several threads on this site, as listed here.

But tourists visit sites while seeing the sights, so it actually makes sense. They are seeing the sites they visit.

The “on site >> on sight” we discussed earler is a bit like this, but I don’t think we’ve mentioned “siteseeing.” Quite a good eggcorn.
