Maybe people think “site” is just a “lite” spelling of “sight,” formed on the same principle as “thru” and “tho”—but “site” has a meaning of its own.

Sometimes it’s not clear whether the writer is consciously using a nonstandard spelling. It’s hard to imagine this being unconscious:

The “on site >> on sight” we discussed earler is a bit like this, but I don’t think we’ve mentioned “siteseeing.” Quite a good eggcorn.
