I have speculated on other words or phrases beside joust that might fit these contexts and influence things, e.g. joining battle , or the ideas of joy and joking fitting the contexts where the joisting is playful, or even hoisting the other guy skyward on the end of your lance. The joy-stick of the quadcopter controllers might well influence things in that example. (See the joist stick entry.)

In any case, joists are characterized by butting directly against a beam or something of the sort. If that similarity is in people’s minds when they talk about joisting in examples like these above, it smells eggcornish.
