Seabees

I don’t think we’ve noted on this Forum the transformation of C.B.s, the acronym for the U.S. Navy’s “construction battalion,” into “seabees.” Presumably a spelling-out of the acronym would have been “ceebees.” The “sea” spelling is the eggcornical (?) influence of the word “sea,” motivated by the ocean context of the group.

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

Re: Seabees

Eggcornical or punnical ―hard to tell. Or both (e.g. arose in someone’s mind eggcornically and then was written out punnishly.)

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)
