Wrestle instead of wrest

From the BBC online news: MPs have warned against the European Commission trying to wrestle control of higher education from member states.

Re: Wrestle instead of wrest

Welcome, John Scrimshaw and reign18. According to a 2006 forum post by dalke, there were already 14,300 Google hits for “wrestle control” almost three years ago.

Burred also noted cattle wrestling a couple of months ago. Neither thread got much attention at the time it was posted, though.

By the way, the best way to search the site is to use the “Google search” button on the main Eggcorn Database page. That will search Database entries, older Contribute! contributions, and this Forum. See: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/

[Oops, make that, “Welcome, reign18.” I hope someone else welcomed John Scrimshaw back in 2007.]

Re: Wrestle instead of wrest

FWIW, here’s the latest example I’ve noticed:

You are beating people with a an intellectual stick and then, when it’s wrestled away from you and you’re whacked with the same stick, you cry foul.
