Movie plot synopsis:

Military injuries:
He has two broken legs, scrapnel wounds and extensive burns of the 3rd degree.[...] He has scrapnel in his eye, but has been fortunate enough to still have sight in it. At this time, there are no plans to try to remove the scrapnel.

Katrina aftermath:
There was a lot of worry that if major hurricanes hit the region, these makeshift shelters would just supply scrapnel to the raging storms and result in more needless, senseless death.

The shrapnel shell was developed by Gen. Henry Shrapnel in 1806. When he passed on in 1842, Henry was 81. The shell was filled with shot and fragmented on explosion in mid-air, maximizing its killing power. The word shrapnel came to mean the small fragments released by the explosion. Scrapnel portrays the pieces as small pieces of scrap metal.

Nice. Also dozens of examples of the transposition “sharpnel” on the web. Examples:
Singapore-based forum: “It’s not supposed to tahan a direct hit, but to keep you safe from things like sharpnel and the like flying about from a near miss.â€
Computer game scenario: “The weapon is designed to release sharpnel and flechette packages over a 30m radius. The damage goes down for each 3m radius beyond 30m.â€

I see your sharpnel, and I raise you fleshettes.
War stories:
The modern beehive round contained thousands of small fleshettes, slightly over one inch in length and had tiny fins to stabilize it during flight. The fleshettes were miniature steel arrows and would kill upon impact.

Body armour patent:
Lastly, an 18-ply composite panel embodying the invention was tested for resistance to 12-gauge fleshettes. Fleshettes are multiple, arrow-like projectiles disposed within a 12-gauge shotgun shell.

The forever war:
Cluster bombs are neither “surgical” instruments or civilian friendly. They are designed to cause the greatest amount of damage in an area by loosing off any number of bomblets which in themselves then loose off hundreds of metal “fleshettes” designed to rip human flesh to pieces.
