“Playing catch up” is an idiomatic usage which relates to closing a work gap. It would seem to be a pretty straightforward concept to catch up with one’s work …and yet I find many examples of “playing ketchup” on the web. I hesitate to call this an eggcorn because I can discover no coherent imagery to it, but I can certainly see how someone might hear “playing ketchup” and stop short to make sense of it.
