"spellblinding" for "spellbinding"

In many cases, “spellblinding” is substituted for “spellbinding” when a visual stimulus is being discussed – which may at first seem contradictory, but then again “dazzling” (which originally meant something like “temporarily blinded by bright light”) is also employed in such contexts. “Spellbinding beauty” and “blinding beauty” mean similar things; “spellblinding beauty” looks like a mix of the two, charmingly conjoining the sorcery of one with the dazzlement of the other. 181 ughits, though many of those are simply noms de Web, etc. Examples:

Re: "spellblinding" for "spellbinding"

As is frequently the case, the imagery of this eggcornical variant is an improvement on the original and I imagine I’ll have difficulty in beating back the pretender when I next use the word spellbinding. And yet, sometimes the phantom finger will amend and correct on our behalf even, or especially, when no correction is required. I find there are several hundred examples of ‘blindweed’ for example, which I assume is the ph-f, more used to blinding than binding perhaps, inventing a variant of the lovely but unloved bindweed. ‘Spellbound’ should clinch it – if there are any ‘spellblinded’ examples we’re home and dry – yes!

I had been playing guitar for 12 yrs….never seen anything like it before…i was spellblinded…superb… Eric I know you will always be with us. ...
