acupunchure << acupuncture

“Acupunchure” for “acupuncture.” “Acu-punch-ure” evokes the image of the needles being punched through the skin.

In English “punch” and “puncture” have always been distinct terms-whether the coalesce at some point in the family of Indo-European languages is unclear.

Frequency on the net: dozens of ughits. Examples.

Blog entry: “Since I had tried aromatheraphy before and I don’t like acupunchure-like massage”

MySpace comment: “would ever consider doing acupunchure with me? ”

Post on a Vietnamese Yahoo Answer site: “At that point, a devastated Eli goes to the Acupunchure Guy and tells him that he’s lost his faith and he’s gonna find a surgeon”

The need for accuracy on the part of the needler is underlined in accupuncture (926000 rghits), and on the part of the health pugilist in accupuncher (2300 rghits). Acupuncher pulls in 25400 rghits.

Re: acupunchure << acupuncture

I think “accupuncher” is the real gem here. A double-yolker, recalling “accurate” and “punch.” Good find.

When I put quotation marks around “accupuncher” to keep Google from counting near misses, I get about 200 ghits, half of them unique, and of these hundred about half seem to be documenting instances of the eggcorn.
