Penned-up Demand for Pent-up Demand

Heard this one on an NPR show today, and a google search returns 60 hits.

Just FYI: this site is great, but may I suggest that forcing someone to register for the forum is a very bad way to encourage contributions. I am sure you have reasons for it, but it’s really a pain in the neck.

I sympathize—I wish we could just have open posting. But as far as I know, that’s impossible—if we don’t have fairly strong “barriers” in place, the amount of spam we get would be overwhelming. In fact, even with a somewhat less sophisticated registration system in place last year, we got so much spam (dozens of messages per day) that we simply didn’t allow any new members to join for months while our tech-guru/site-owner looked for a better system. We’ve unfortunately got to live in a virtual gated community on today’s unruly Web.

And welcome to the forum, JoeP.
