Don't hide your light under a bush

I saw this on a powerpoint about leadership today, and there appear to be lots of examples when I Google.

The original biblical quote says that men “do not light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick”.
I think if the translation specified a “bushel basket”, which is what I assume is meant, then this mistake might be less frequent. As it is, “bushel” is an uncommon word and the image of putting a lantern or flashlight under a bush is not too far-fetched.

Re: Don't hide your light under a bush

I’m sometimes convinced a reshaping has already been posted but can find no evidence to back up my impression. This is such a case—I thought we had “hiding * light under a bush” somewhere, but all our various search engines say no. And that may indicate just how natural this feels to me. I think it’s a good, widespread phrasal eggcorn—and kinda humorous, to boot.
