meet market/meat market

Was reading http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news … ntPage=all and came across

Chang’s calculations essentially treated the world like one big meet market where any given guy was equally likely to pair up with any woman,

The term as I know it is “meat market”, which is a place like a bar where people evaluate each other like a side of meat – only for the physical aspects. By comparison, a “meet market” sounds like a place where you might talk with someone first. Looking around there are many pages which use “meet market” as a term for people to meet, but none of the dictionaries I consulted knew that as a term.
