'hang me downs' for 'hand me downs'

I suppose that clothing inherited from an older sibling or friend might be too large, and so hang loosely off its new owner. Uncommon:

Do you think it’s weird to wear someone’s old clothing….
I don’t think its weird exactly, as i used to wear clothes from my big sis – ‘hang me downs’, but maybe its ‘cos she’s family and i know where they came …

Makeba wore the usual tattered hang-me-downs from her older sisters.

She is also my supplier of children’s hang me downs as her kids are a few years older than mine.
