As time passes, the odds become greater that one will commit eggcornery in one’s own write*, than to recognize it in someone else’s. “Dotage”, according to the Online ED, dates from c. 1200, from Middle Low German doten, “be foolish” and was used to refer to senility before the 15th C. “Dolt”, on the other hand, seems to be a variant of dold for “dull, foolish”, mixed with dulte, dolte, the pp. forms of M.E. dullen, “to dull or make stupid”, from the mid 16th. I can relate to the blended doltage. This one could be intentional; I’ve tried to choose those uses that seem most innocent.

Now how did I miss that; it even has the same quoted example. All I can say is that it’s self-referential. Further along in my doltage, I hope to look into the decay rate of the links we paste here. If I don’t forget.
