"to hammer" for "to hamper"

“Hampering efforts” to do something can certainly “deal a blow” to those efforts. In the citations below, I’ve tried to exclude instances where “hammer” appears to mean mainly “criticize.” I’d guess there are fewer than 20 instances of “hammer(s)(ed)(ing) efforts,” but changing the noun would probably bring up more citations. Most instances unsurprisingly come from newspapers and other forms of media. Examples:

Continued dry conditions are hammering efforts to extinguish the blazes.

Turbulence has hammered North Carolina’s efforts to hold its first lottery, but retailers can begin applying to sell tickets or other lottery merchandise.

The design of the roof and the rapid spread of fire through it hammered firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the blaze.

Rescuers struggled to get relief supplies and search crews to an Indonesian town devastated by an earthquake, but a massive aftershock on Saturday and damage to the local airstrip hammered efforts.

This one roundtrips:

[re a particular point of contention:] I could have cost us a year’s breach in our relationship by hampering on it.

Also:

Don’t let it hamp your style!

Hampy New Year to all!
