'come through in the crunch' for'...clutch'

The original is opaque and the eggcorn makes sense. About 40 ghits. Examples:

Re: 'come through in the crunch' for'...clutch'

This one is not a good eggcorn for me, because (1) the lexical and syntactic pieces to construct it as an independent phrase are readily available: crunch meaning ‘a (metaphorically) tight or difficult place’, in the crunch , and come through PrepPhrase (along with other relevant patterns) are all established as part of the English language for many of us at least. (2) Crunch and clutch are not all that close phonologically or orthographically.
.
Nevertheless, I would not at all deny that the existence, and relative opacity, of “come through in the clutch” is likely to have exerted some influence in people’s forming of the other phrase, and some may have thought the new phrase was the same as what they remembered of the older one (assuming the clutch version actually was historically prior). To the extent that happened, sure, it’s eggcornish. And the two words do share the phonological pattern kLə(n)tʃ (where L means “liquid”) and the orthographic pattern cCu(n)ch , so the signifiants are indeed much closer than chance.
.
“Come through in the crutch” also occurs, btw. I can get a (lame but) possible eggcornish meaning out of it, but there are not many examples and I wonder if it’s standard for anybody.
