"undertoe" for undertow

Straight from the horse’s mouth. The site of the first example, “Things I used to believe”, is chock-a-block with first person accounts of eggcornish beliefs.

Things I used to believe
I thought “undertow” was spelled “undertoe,” because it’s under your toes… I learned the truth at a spelling bee. Good thing it was the guy next to me who got that word, and not me!

Cancún dangers
strong undertoe in some areas, sun poisoning, parasailing, mopeds

Drowning, news comment
TO CORRECT THIS STORY..THEIR IS NO SUCH THING AS A UNDERTOE OR RIPTIDE-THE REAL AND ONLY WORD IS RIP CURRENT IT PULLS YOU OUT NOT UNDER..IF ITS HIGH TIDE OR LOW TIDE THEIRS STILL A RIP CURRENT AND NOTHING PULLS UYOU UNDER THE WATER JUST OUT SO UNDERTOE DOES NOT EXIST…

The last one has a another vision of the undertoe. He seems to be thinking of the berm, or the sudden underwater dropoff at the bottom of a beach – the “toe” of the beach, perhaps.

Unsolved mysteries
I dropped off of the undertoe,& went straight down. It probably wasn’t that deep for an adult, but I couldn’t touch the bottom. I remember being under water, trying to scream, and trying to grab at the sand from the edge of the undertoe, but the sand just kept coming off in my hands.
