mix and match = OK
mismatch = OK
How did we get to mixed-match? And does it reference the former or the latter?

Regarding Mixed-match…
It’s hard to identify your exact context, so choose your category below…
1. Makeup
Mixed-match would refer to a pair of colors that could be mixed in any desired proportion until they matched your particular skin tone.
2. Clothes
Mixed-match might be short for Mixed-to-Match. Mixed-to-match generally means a selection of shirts and pants which could be used in any combination (mixed) and still “match” colorwise and patternwise. I’m guessing this is the meaning you are seeking.
3. Sports
Mixed match sometimes refers to a doubles match with both men and women players.
4. Video games
Mixed match refers to a match where the players have set different handicaps for themselves.
So, if I’ve guessed your context correctly, I’d say that mixed-match is the same as mix and match.

Thanks jorkel. Your response makes sense. I was quite confused.
When I first heard this, it was in context to having one fingernail significantly shorter than the others.

I don’t think I’ve ever discovered a Lehman so this may be as close as I ever get, though I submit it without conviction. I’m deliberately choosing capitalised examples to help support the flimsiness of my case.
I loved the first one! But I did it with my normal hair it looked amazing since I was wearing Mitch matched shoes and Mitch match long socks
I think the ice cream man takes the fingers cuz his fingers look Mitch matched.
The headlights were Mitch matched.
Today I had to be extremely Mitch matched maybe not extreme but Mitch matched anyways so that’s like not matching looking cuckoo…
I guess in Hollywood you can just do whatever you want and your parents could care less. Mitch matched shoes and a dishovelled look isn’t the business.
The last example gives us in addition the puzzling ‘could care less’ which seems to mean the opposite, like recent use of wicked perhaps? and another crack at the disheveled eggcorn.

Who would be the referenced Mitch? Does he/she match, or get matched, or what? In my family it could be a pun on the name of my daughter-in-law, Michelle, who is often called Mitchie. E.g. if she dressed her boys alike we could call them Mitch-matched, but it wouldn’t be an eggcorn for us, unless one of the kids then learned it as the standard form or something.
.
It could be an anticipatory alliteration (trailing at the end of the word, like a rhyme) or shifting the consonant to get a vowel-shift pair parallel to mish-mash , or some other meaning-neutral (therefore non-eggcornish) shift.
.
Dishovelled sounds disinterred, undead perhaps. Just in time for Halloween, I reckon.

Good question. No good answers I’m afraid, though I suppose Mitch could be a clothing company like Gap or Next or Boss, but specialising perhaps in introducing the bereaved halves of pairs of things. I have drawerfuls of examples. Or Mitch clothing could be remarkable for its clashing, migraine-inducing colours and patterns. Told you it was flimsy.
As for Halloween, the less said the better. The old tradition of bobbing for apples and making swede/turnip lanterns has been supplanted by shopfuls of giant pumpkins, toxic tons of plastic tat in the form of horror costumes and masks, with the merry extortion game of trick or treat grafted on for good measure. Bah! Humbug!

I have added some new photos to the gallery… They are a missed match of pictures so I put them in a new category.

Verily, a Lehman, Sir Peter.
I know Mitch, by the way, and he’s offended.
Nice collection of mix-matched mish-mash eggcorns, David B.

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

A most wonderful self-referential example of a fuzzy spot. Not totally homogenous (are any of them?) but all the more interesting for the strands of derivation or sense-making interpretation that can be discerned.
