A rival eggcorn forum

I’m not as hip and technophilic as Kem; instead of using Google Alerts to see what people are saying about the Eggcorn Forum, I occasionally just punch “Eggcorn Forum” into Google and follow the links. Today I was surprised to end up at a site called “Eggcorn Forum”—but not our beloved home away from home. It appears to be part of a gigantic forum mulitplex called “Forum Jar,” and boy do they have a lot of (empty) forums. No one has posted to Eggcorn Forum yet, and I believe that their Zeugma, Sememe, Polysemy, Spoonerism, Metathesis, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Mark Liberman, Geoffrey Pullum, and Arnold Zwickly fora are all still untenanted. Apparently the Mariah Carey forum is the most active at the moment. But I’m convinced that with enough publicity, the Sememe Forum can give her a good rung for her money.

Re: A rival eggcorn forum

The cynicism of advertising on the web really has no bounds. It wasn’t enough for these sleazy, boilerplate, pay-per-click ad revenue sites to fake content in order to sell whatever. Now they want others to come and provide content for them on a zillion randomly created fora, from which they draw a few corpuscles of blood fractions of a cent per visit, multiplied a dreamed-of zillion times (I first wrote “mutiplied”). They’re para-sites.

I love “para-sites.” Is that yours? It deserves to spread, in any case.

I agree with your view, though I have to admit that I’m kinda cheered by the thought that experts on malaprops could have their own fan fora. I envision posts entitled things like “My top 5 favorite linguistics papers by Arnold Zwicky.”

Re: A rival eggcorn forum

I’m currently up to my elbows in teaching parasite ecology so I recognized the symptoms of the para-sites quite naturally.

I’m tickled by the idea of a linguist-adulation forum.
